Buchi, a nightclub DJ turned Evangelist cuts the image of
one deeply involved in his song far beyond the sound.
In his own words, “It is not my voice,
it’s not even my style, it is The Word. The lyrical
depth of my music is a result of The Word, that’s my
fountain”. Nothing suggested that Buchi who held sway
as D-Jay in the late eighties and into the nineties, would
end up in the Church.
His passion for reggae music is hardly surprising
considering that as a student of English Language and Literary
Studies in the University of Lagos; he had become well acquainted
with the activist literature of black and African writers
such as Mutabaruka, Dennis Brutus, Soyinka etc.
By 1988, armed with a masters degree in English
and a wealth of exposure to both local and international reggae
tunes and acts such as Culture, Burning Spear, Eric Donaldson
& Frankie Paul, Buchi was widely expected to begin recording
his own songs, but this was not to be as he preferred, rather,
to combine his disc jockeying with a PhD programme in the
University of Lagos.
In 1992, Buchi gave his life to Jesus and
has remained a believer since.
These days, his debut album and So Beautiful
his sophomore were remarkable as they won him several awards,
including:
The Prestigious MEN (Award for Musical Excellence
in Nigeria)
Award for Best Gospel Category (English) in 1999.
Faith Award For Best Gospel Reggae (2000)
Faith Award For Artiste of the Year (2000)
POMP Award for Best Reggae Gospel (2001)
TOMA Award for Best Artiste Of the Year (2004)
TOMA Award For Contemporary Gospel Album
Of the Year (2004)
TOMA Award For Gospel Album of The Year (2004)
